Cassie's Butterfly Project!

This is a story that I just wrote about one week ago. It is about a girl in the second grade class who is doing a butterfly project. She learns about Painted Lady butterflies and their four part life cycle. I wrote this story for my science class project. Tell me if you like it and ways that I can improve it. Please comment on it it helps me a lot.

Cassie was in Mrs. Penny’s 2nd grade class. They were starting a project on butterflies. Cassie’s teacher said that they would be getting Painted Lady caterpillars and that they would turn into butterflies about 2 weeks later. Painted Lady butterflies are a yellowish orange, black and white. When the caterpillars came everyone was excited. Each one came in its own separate container. They were all ready filled with food so there was no need to open the container. Caterpillars spend most of the time eating Leaves using their strong mandibles. They would be observing the caterpillars over the next few weeks to see how they have changed (observing means to watch.)After a few days the container has lots of silk looking webs and the caterpillar was a lot longer. Cassie’s 2nd grade class was learning a lot about butterflies. They had learned the life cycle of a butterfly was made up of 4 parts. First was the egg, then the larva, after the larva was the pupa, and last was the adult. More days pasted and the caterpillars were hanging on the top of the lid in a J shape. That is called the J form. That meant that they were getting closer to becoming butterflies. Next they formed a chrysalis. That meant that next they would be adults soon because they were already on the third step. Cassie was getting more and more excited each day. She learned that butterflies were insects. She also learned that a butterfly’s body was covered by tiny sensory hairs.

The two weeks were almost done so they took the lids off very carefully and put them in a butterfly net. The net provided a place where they could fly around without escaping. One day while Cassie was in class someone noticed that one of the butterflies had broken out of the chrysalis and was flying around. Then one by one the others did the same. Pretty soon they all were flying around. Mrs. Penny said that it was time to let them go. So, we all went outside. She gave us each a butterfly, and then we let them go. Butterflies are found all over the world and live in all different types of environments so I knew that they would be okay. I loved watching the caterpillars turn to butterflies. It was a great experience. It was amazing that they could change so much just in 2 weeks.I went home that day ready to tell a great story to my parents about how I learned about Painted Lady butterflies and their four part life cycle.
